Facebook/Meta Ads Basics for SMEs

Meta ads don't capture search intent — they create demand. Why an "ad-like" creative underperforms, and where targeting's real power lies.

Facebook/Meta Ads Basics for SMEs

Facebook and Instagram ads (today running unified as Meta ads) work on an entirely different logic than Google Ads — and this difference is what most SMEs fail to grasp when they first try advertising on these platforms, then disappointedly quit because "it didn't pay off." Neither is better or worse than the other — they serve different intent, and understanding that is the first step to good results.

The intent you can't target with a keyword

Google Ads shows up for people already actively searching for something — meaning the intent already exists, they just need to find the right provider. Meta ads, by contrast, reach people who aren't searching for anything right now — they're scrolling social media, among their friends' posts — and the ad's job is to spark a need they haven't even consciously recognized yet. This is a fundamentally different marketing task: not capturing an existing intent, but sparking a new one.

This difference means a Meta ad that tries to sell as if the viewer is already searching for something — dry, factual, "click here if you need X" style — typically underperforms compared to an ad that stops the scroll with a strong visual element or a surprising claim, and only then introduces the concrete offer. On social media, the ad first has to win attention before it can even get to the offer — this is the step most beginner advertisers skip.

Targeting — where the real power lies

The Meta ad system's biggest strength is the depth of targeting: you can target not just by demographics (age, gender, location), but by interests, behavior, and — most effectively — by people similar to your own existing customers. This last one, so-called lookalike targeting, means you can upload a list of your existing customers, and the system finds new people who are statistically similar to them — this is far more effective than an audience assembled from your own assumptions, because the system works from real data, not guesswork.

A common beginner mistake is targeting too broad or too narrow. Too broad a targeting reaches a lot of poorly-matched people who are unlikely to buy — this is expensive with few results. Too narrow a targeting, on the other hand, reaches so few people that the system can't gather enough data to learn who the ad works best for — this is the so-called learning phase, necessary at the start of every campaign, which too-narrow an audience prolongs or even blocks.

The creative — where most SMEs underinvest

Because a Meta ad competes for attention on a scrolled feed, the creative (the image or video the ad uses) plays a far bigger role here than in Google Ads' text ads. A professionally-looking but too "ad-like" image often underperforms a simpler, more authentic-looking shot — because users on social media have learned to scroll past whatever they instantly recognize as an ad, and respond better to what feels natural, like it belongs in their own feed.

With Meta ads, the prettiest picture doesn't win — the one that doesn't look like an ad at first glance does, and that's exactly why it stops the scroll for a moment.

The practical advice here is to never rely on a single creative — the system lets you test multiple variations simultaneously, and it usually turns out that two or three significantly different-style versions perform very differently with the target audience. This kind of fast, data-driven testing is what sets Meta ads apart even compared to Google Ads: here, varying the creative often has a bigger impact on results than fine-tuning the targeting.

If you're about to start with Meta ads, or they haven't brought the results you expected so far, let's review your targeting and creatives together before you spend any more.
